Senior Tutors are responsible for supporting and managing the development of their department’s undergraduate and postgraduate personal tutors. Each department will have at least one Senior Tutor.
Senior Tutors are experienced staff who will be able to guide and support personal tutors in handling student problems and queries, or as a second opinion on an issue.
You can read the detailed description of the role and responsibilities of a Senior Tutor (UG) here.
A list of undergraduate and postgraduate Senior Tutors can be found in the Student Support Zone.
The Chief Student Services Officer is responsible for managing the Senior Tutors which are attached to each academic year.
Summary of Senior Tutors
Senior Tutors support personal tutors within their department, where they:
- Ensure all personal tutors undergo appropriate training, are kept informed of changes to policy at Imperial, and have the opportunity to develop their tutoring skills through continued professional development
- Liaise with personal tutors to monitor the academic progress and take action where there is a cause for concern
- Act as a primary source of support and advice for personal tutors, including signposting them to other expert areas of Imperial
Senior Tutors can assist you with liaising with the Departmental Disabilities Officer (DDO), the Disability Advisory Service (DAS) and Registry to ensure that students with disabilities are advised and assisted appropriately, and in referring students to other sources of support, including the departmental Student Wellbeing Adviser (SWA), at Imperial as appropriate and to liaise with these services.
Senior Tutors are required to ensure compliance with current university rules, academic regulations, academic policies, and procedures, including those relating to academic and examination regulations, discipline, complaints, and appeals.
Senior Tutors may also be required to attend committee and panel meetings including the Mitigating Circumstances Boards (MCBs), Staff-Student Committees or Staff-Student Liaison Groups, and Disciplinary Committees. Senior Tutors may be invited to attend committee and panel meetings which might include departmental Module Assessment Boards (MABs) and Staff-Student Liaison Committees. Senior Tutors are invited to attend Faculty and university level Senior Tutor Forums.
In the School of Medicine, Senior Tutors operate a supportive role only and are not involved in disciplinary action. Faculties will offer support to those who are facing disciplinary action at Imperial through external agencies, especially where this is a requirement of external regulatory bodies.
