Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the main cause of death and disability in working age people, yet patients with severe TBI are very difficult for clinicians to manage in the acute stages of care as they are in a drug-induced coma. This project pulls together research expertise on biomedical sensors, novel materials, neurocritical care and neurophysiology to give a simple probe that makes contact with brain tissue but does not penetrate it. The probe will assess brain tissue health by monitoring electrical and neurochemical properties over a substantial area of brain tissue thought 'at risk' on the basis of CT scans.
