Dear all,

Following a competitive search, it is my pleasure to let you know that Professor Peter Haynes has been appointed as our new Provost and Deputy President.

Currently our Vice-Provost for Education and Student Experience, many of you will know Peter from the various roles he has held at Imperial since he joined us in 2007.

In his new role, he will have responsibility for Imperial’s academic affairs, working across our entire community to ensure excellence in our education, research and translation activities, and furthering our reputation as a world-leading university.

Peter brings a superb mix of academic and leadership experience. Prior to becoming Vice-Provost in October 2022, he was Head of the Department of Materials for seven years. In 2012, he was appointed Professor of Theory and Simulation of Materials, a joint appointment between the Departments of Materials and Physics. He was awarded the Maxwell Medal and Prize for Computational Physics by the Institute of Physics in 2010 and was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2021.

An interim Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) will be appointed while we search for his replacement.

Finally, I am very grateful to our outgoing Provost Professor Ian Walmsley, who is already engaging with Peter to ensure a smooth transition. We will celebrate Ian’s achievements as Provost in full before he leaves at the end of September.

Peter will take up his new role on 1 October 2025.

Best wishes,

Hugh
