What is the REC staff survey?

The 2025 Race Equality Charter staff survey has been extended and will be live between 24 November and 22 December. This will be an anonymous questionnaire of 30 multiple choice questions on the agree-disagree scale and two free text questions to identify how ethnicity impacts careers, wellbeing and sense of belonging at Imperial. The survey will inform Imperial’s submission for a Silver REC Award in November 2026. This will include a comprehensive action plan to address any areas where our staff and students from Minority Ethnic groups may need more championing to attain their potential and thrive at the university.

What has resulted from the previous survey and REC work?

  • An Inclusive Recruitment webpage was launched in 2022 to give advice and guidance to hiring managers.
  • The Beyond Ethnicity Career Conference for staff and students at Early Career stage is in its fifth year and has welcomed nearly 500 delegates.
  • Since 2022, twelve visiting professors have joined Imperial from across the world through The Provost’s Visiting Professor Programme.
  • The Imperial History group, launched in 2020, consulted with staff, students and alumni on the College’s history. The Central Library was renamed the Abdus Salam Library in 2023.
  • Four Imperial As One Media Academies have taken place and over 100 people have now graduated from the programme which delivers expert communications training for minority ethnic staff and students.
  • Exhibitions to increase visibility of Minority Ethnic staff and students have included projects in partnership with the Royal College of Art and the Shifting the Lens photo series.
  • The Communications Division created the Writing about Ethnicity guidance after wide internal consultation to support the College community to write and talk with sensitivity about race and ethnicity.
  • The Black Students’ Recruitment Advisory Panel (BSRAP) was established in 2021 and is chaired by students.
  • The Activate Mentoring Programme for students and early career staff of Black heritage was launched in November 2022 and supports recipients of Imperial’s Scholarships for Black heritage students and Minority Ethnic PhD students

When will the survey results be circulated?

The results of the REC staff survey will be available in January 2026 and cascaded to Faculty EDI committees. Data will be in percentages and any individually identifying information will be redacted.

Who looks at the data and where will it be held

The anonymised data will be held internally at Imperial within the EDIC shared space.

All the information will be collated, analysed and reported on by the Race Equality Charter Coordinator.

Your involvement

If you are staff at Imperial we ask that you take a few minutes to fill the REC Staff survey out. The survey is open to all staff, and we encourage staff from every ethnicity to complete it so we can see where specific groups may be affected more than others and find ways to tackle this.

All answers to the questions are optional.
