We, the team around the 10x5 wind tunnel invite you to approach us with your questions about experiment design, instrumentation expertise and measurement best practice, around the field of fluid mechanics. We’re a very keen team and we look forward to participating and enabling your research. We’re located at the Roderic Hill (RODH) building at the South Kensington campus, part of the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial.

Students: approach one of our team members – we’re always very happy to help you with your requirements in aerodynamics.

Mr Ricardo Huerta Cruz

Research Engineer

BSc Aerospace Engineering, MSc Aerospace Dynamics

I am a wind tunnel research engineer and a specialist in aerodynamic measurements, especially ones related to aircraft aerodynamics. I enable research and teaching in the 10x5 wind tunnel, and, with the rest of the team, provide consultancy services to the building physics industry. I have a keen interest in aircraft half model wind tunnel testing and in establishing new knowledge in the effective treatment of the symmetry plane.

Dr Kevin Gouder

Research Fellow + Manager 10’x5’ Wind Tunnel

BEng (Hons), MSc, DIC, PhD

I am an aerodynamicist with keen interest in 1) fundamentals of boundary layers, boundary layer control, interaction of boundary layers with structures, and interaction of vortices with boundary layers, and 2) control of aeroelastic systems. I am also, an instrumentation specialist with extensive experience in sophisticated measurements in notoriously difficult experiments. I co-supervise a PDRA in EC Horizon project ICONIC investigating wind farm coordinated control, and a PhD student investigating magnetic levitation systems for wind tunnels. I also supervise Final Year Project students investigating boundary layer suction for aircraft half model wind tunnel testing. I also manage the 10x5 wind tunnel where with the rest of my team, we enable research, teaching, and provide consultancy services to industry, especially in the field of building physics.

Mr Paul Howard

Wind Tunnel Technician

I am a wind tunnel technician with oversight of all technical requirements of the 10x5 wind tunnel, research and teaching activities around the two 18” wind tunnels, the shaker rig, four undergraduate teaching labs, and management of the labs in the RODH part of the Department of Aeronautics. I am also a very capable machinist having vast experience in metal workshop operations having come from an F1 background.

Mr William McArdle

Research Engineer

MSc Natural Sciences with emphasis on Fluid Mechanics

I am a wind tunnel research engineer and a specialist in aerodynamic measurement techniques especially in optical flow measurements. I enable research and teaching in the 10x5 wind tunnel, and, with the rest of the team, provide consultancy services to the building physics industry. I have a keen interest in vortex dynamics and how these modify flows that they impinge on.
