Industry and outreach
The Department and its staff maintain strong links with industry, through alumni, personal and professional relationships, and also through research and consultancy.
Services to industry
Access our expertise
Hire a Technical expert
Many of our staff take on consultancy work, often through Imperial Consultants, which is the consultancy arm of Imperial College. Consult our academic staff list to identify any members of staff who work in your area of interest.
Hire our facilities
Our state-of-the-art facilities are housed within our 5 main laboratories and are available for hire for commercial testing and analysis. Find out more about our laboratories.
Attend a Continuing Professional Development Course
The Department offers a number of our MSc modules on a stand-alone basis. They typically take one term to complete. Find out more about the CPD programme.
Engage with our students
Recruit our students
Our students are keen to take on industrial placements during holiday periods. We also internally advertise graduate positions to those coming to the end of their studies. We run an annual meet the industry event where you can engage with our students, raise your profile, and let them know of any upcoming opportunities. Find out more about student recruitment.
Other ways to get involved
We are lucky to have input from industry across a range of our activities, for example:
- Research collaborations
- Student sponsorship
- Supervision of UG and PG projects
- Assisting with teaching
- Student prize donations
- Give a talk/seminar
Outreach and Public Engagement
We undertake Outreach activities with the primary aim of getting young people excited by civil engineering and the prospect of studying it here at Imperial.
Examples include TV appearances by John Burland (The One Show and Michael Portillo's Great Continental Rail Journeys) and Ahmer Wadee (Engineering Connections), occasional school visits and involvement in external schemes including Royal Institution Masterclasses, ICE Christmas School Lectures and Budding Brunel, Arkwright Scholars and Headstart sessions.
