NIHR Funding opportunities - CFL Fellowship

NIHR are pleased to announce that the latest funding opportunities for the new Clinical Future Leaders Fellowship (CFLF) is now open!

The Clinical FLF is a coordinated cross funder initiative with MRC, CRUK and BHF in response to recent OSCHR reports that included recommendations to provide clearer career pathways and more tenured positions for clinical academics.

It is a postdoctoral level opportunity, supporting awardees to undertake research and training & leadership programmes

OpenPredictor in action. Can AI deliver on the promise of reducing waiting lists in elective care?

What is it?
OpenPredictor (OP) is an AI-powered platform that supports surgical decision-making and preoperative optimisation. It uses routinely collected patient data to predict perioperative risk, prioritise waiting lists, and guide clinicians in preparing patients for surgery. By integrating with hospital systems, OP automates risk stratification and workflow coordination to identify high-risk patients early and allocate resources efficiently.

Why should I care?
Delays in identifying high-risk patients and inconsistent preoperative assessments can lead to cancellations, inefficiencies, and patient harm. With record surgical waiting lists, OpenPredictor uses AI to flag high-risk patients early and enable timely optimisation. This helps reduce late cancellations, improve theatre utilisation, and ensure teams focus where it matters most.

Longer working lives: exploring rising state pension age on health and wellbeing inequalities in later life

The UK State Pension Age has risen to 66 and is set to increase further in the coming year(s). These rises have the potential to have significant implications for the health, wellbeing, and financial security of specific population groups – including those in low wage and manual jobs, unpaid carers, and people living in disadvantaged areas. We undertook an international evidence review and analysed survey data to better understand these impacts, and how they might differ by sex, ethnicity and geography. We tested our findings through a stakeholder roundtable, to support recommendations for future policy on ageing, work and inequalities.

NIHR Doctoral Award Cohort 2

The Doctoral Award is a 3-year funding opportunity designed to support the career development of all health and social care professionals through PhD research.

The award supports research in any scientific discipline or sector that contributes to improving health, including public health and social care, within the NIHR’s funding remit.

For clinicians, practitioners, and local authority applicants, 20% of the award can be dedicated to clinical or practice time.
