The Food, Diet and Land cluster explores how food security may evolve under diverse climate, land-use and socio-economic futures. We adopt a systems-based approach that integrates biophysical processes, technological innovation and socio-political dynamics across a range of agro-ecological and governance contexts. Central to this is evaluating trade-offs between food production and other ecosystem services, including water regulation, soil conservation, carbon storage, biodiversity and cultural values. We use modelling approaches to examine land-use intensity, landscape configuration, hydrological processes and biogeochemical cycles. 

We also apply perspectives such as One Health to understand how agricultural systems shape human and environmental wellbeing. Our work examines risks including heat stress and respiratory illness, and explores how nature-based solutions and green infrastructure can mitigate extreme events such as drought, flooding and urban heat. We evaluate restoration initiatives, circular economy innovations—such as biochar, biogas and solar-powered systems—and farmer-led learning approaches that strengthen adaptive capacity. We also investigate governance systems, institutional effectiveness and the role of climate migration as an adaptive strategy, while drawing on Indigenous and local knowledge. 

Our research is grounded in place-based studies across regions facing acute environmental and social pressures, from Central and East Africa to rapidly urbanising contexts. These studies draw on diverse indicators, including biodiversity, climate vulnerability, infrastructure, financial access, gender and environmental justice. 

This work is collaborative and transdisciplinary. We partner with international organisations, governments, civil society, local communities and the private sector to co-develop practical, evidence-based solutions. Our goal is to support more sustainable, resilient and inclusive food systems through approaches such as climate-smart agriculture, regenerative practices, landscape multifunctionality and participatory decision-making.
