People and nature

The People and Nature cluster takes a systems-based approach to understanding the relationships between people and the natural environment, bringing together researchers and partners across disciplines, sectors, and geographic scales to address pressing environmental and societal challenges. Through innovative and context-specific approaches, the cluster advances research on nature-based solutions, environmental management, climate mitigation and adaptation, human health and well-being, and sustainable development to support more resilient futures.  

Grounded in principles of equity and justice, the cluster integrates diverse perspectives and knowledge systems to better understand intersectionality, existing inequalities, and uneven environmental impacts. Through international collaboration and real-world engagement, it develops practical, evidence-based solutions that contribute to healthier ecosystems, thriving communities, and global sustainability, climate, and biodiversity goals.  

The cluster also fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange across the Department, connecting researchers, staff, and students working on conservation, ecosystem services, environmental governance, sustainability, and human–environment interactions. By creating opportunities to share methods, expertise, and ideas, the cluster strengthens research capacity, supports career development, and enables collaborative projects and new funding opportunities, enhancing the impact and reach of research within the Department and beyond.
