Women in Maths is a student-led group focused on celebrating diversity and inclusion within the Department of Mathematics at Imperial. Your role is to deliver various events throughout the year for students, such as bi-weekly talks from academics and alumni. 

Why women study Maths at Imperial

"A network for women in maths is important because visibility plays a huge part in encouraging younger women to follow that career path and get involved in academia. Seeing successful female mathematicians builds confidence not only for women looking to get into a PhD or an academic career, but also for women already in this field. It's also important for women in research to have a network of people who have had similar experiences. The student-led group LGBTQ+ in Maths focuses on developing a warm and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ people within the Department of Mathematics at Imperial, facilitating opportunities for maths students to connect with like-minded individuals and creating a supportive network within the department.

The LGBTQ+ in Maths Student Group main objective of this community group is to provide a warm and inclusive environment for all LGBTQ+ maths students. Their role as student leaders is to be responsible for organising events throughout the year, facilitating opportunities for maths students to connect with like-minded LGBTQ+ individuals and creating a supportive network within maths.

As a Department, we are committed to ensuring that our staff and students who identify as LGBTQIA+ are supported and feel comfortable being as open as they wish to be during their time with us.

Our Departmental Commitment:

• Our Department EDI Training policy includes the College LGBTQ+ awareness course as one of our recommended training courses for all staff.
• Gender-neutral toilets are available on the South Kensington campus.
• Many staff declare their preferred pronouns in their email signatures.

Imperial has a network, Imperial 600, for all LGBTQ+ staff, postgraduate students and their allies which holds events throughout the year and as part of LGBTQ+ History Month. Imperial 600 distributes rainbow lanyards for staff and students to visibly show their support for out LGBTQ+ staff and students. There are a number of resources available on the website giving advice for all staff on how to be an LGBTQ+ ally, a bi ally and a trans ally.

The Department of Mathematics aligns with the Imperial College Trans staff policy.

Black in Maths is a student-led group dedicated to building a strong community, raising visibility, and opening up professional pathways for Black heritage students in the Department of Mathematics. They run a mix of career panels, networking dinners, and casual social nights so undergraduates can connect with each other and meet successful Black mathematicians working in both industry and academia.

The group plays an active role in wider campus initiatives, collaborating on key events like Black Voices in FoNS to champion Black representation across all STEM fields. They are also taking their work beyond Imperial this autumn, with team members officially confirmed to speak on a panel at the Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference in Scotland this October.

The Directed Reading Program is a fully student-led initiative focused on promoting collaborative research and learning within the Department of Mathematics. They are responsible for matching students into group reading projects based on shared interests, bridging the gap between standard coursework and advanced, independent mathematical topics. Backed by senior student mentors, the program runs weekly discussions and regular catch-ups, culminating in an end-of-term Symposium where groups present their progress via poster sessions. Maths Student Colloquium is a student-led group dedicated to promoting research and fostering inclusion within the Department of Mathematics. They are responsible for organising engaging talks that aim to showcase mathematics that lies outside a typical undergraduate course throughout the year, this includes,  UROP/projects/other independent research and more. they collaborate with external partners to hold student conferences, especially the biannual Warwick-Imperial Mathematics Conference. This is an opportunity to impact and inspire fellow students through meaningful gatherings positively.

The Mathematics Society (MathSoc)

The Imperial College London Mathematics Society (MathSoc) is entirely student-led and dedicated to supporting maths members. As part of MathSoc, they take on the responsibility of organising diverse social and networking events, contributing to the development of a close-knit community within the Maths Department.

The Mathematics Society (MathSoc) plays an important part in the Department and arranges events for students and staff, including parties, outings, special lectures and careers events. Welcome to MathSoc!

I want to start by saying how extremely jealous I am of you all.

You’ve been invited to spend the most transformative and exciting years of your lives at the best
university in the world, studying the best subject in the world, in the best city in the world. You
are this country’s next generation of world-class mathematicians, and I know you’ll live up to the task. You’ve spent the last decade of your life preparing for this very moment and now it’s here.

Congratulations. So what’s next?

From when you walk into Huxley for the first time, to when you graduate - the Maths Society will be by your side every step of the way to make sure your next few years here are everything you dreamed they would be. Speaking to our alumni it’s clear that their strongest and most
cherished memories of their time at Imperial weren’t made in the library.

The Maths Society’s sole mission is to make sure you build genuine friendships with your peers, have a well-rounded university experience and set you up for life after university. Our committee has worked this summer tirelessly to organise some of the biggest events in London for you all, so there’s something to look forward to almost every single day! 

Our October & November Events Calendar:
Below this letter should be our provisional events calendar for term 1! From massive boat
parties with other departments, to the biggest pub crawl in London. From dating gameshows to poker tournaments. From smooth jazz nights to a trip to Cambridge University. There truly is
something for everyone!

More details about specific events will be publicised closer to the start of term, but I hope this is enough to get you hyped up already! A lot of hard work has gone into the planning so if you see one of our committee members walking around Huxley feel free to praise them.

Our Initiatives:
We are home to the biggest and most successful quant finance programme in Europe - Cauchy Capital. Every Tuesday evening in the main lecture theatre we will have the world’s biggest companies (including Jane Street, Citadel, Optiver, QRT etc.) and academics coming in, in person, to deliver workshops and training on the industry to help you explore the field and make sure you’re well ahead of the competition when it comes to spring week/summer
internship applications.

As well as this, there will be the opportunity to compete in exclusive
competitions to build experience right from the very start. Moreover, we are extremely grateful to be working alongside very experienced team leaders, most of whom are mathematicians
themselves, to run a selective university trading team which will be an amazing opportunity to
get hands-on experience with quant trading and finance! We launch on Tuesday October 7th so I hope to see as many of you there as possible!

As well as this, we have our annual department-wide tradition of MathSoc families! You will be
paired with your peers as siblings and older students as parents. A good parent can give you
advice when it comes to your studies/careers/life at uni and even put you on for exclusive
opportunities - and they'll stay with you for as long as you're at Imperial! It's one of the oldest
traditions in the department and definitely one of the most rewarding. We will organise events
around the family system so we will try our best to make sure the matching process is as
successful as possible. Our first event for MathSoc families will be Thursday October 9th
alongside the rest of RCSU.

The maths society also has a great sporting culture. We have our own football team (complete
with our own kit!) and regularly book matches and tournaments against the other departments.

We will also be collaborating with other sports such as cricket, hockey, table tennis etc. It’s a
great way to get involved with sport at a more casual and social level than the other sports clubs around Imperial, especially if you’re new to the sport or haven’t played in a while. We will be having our first match against Chemical Engineering on Friday October 10th!
