About ESAT

Test format

The ESAT is a computer-based test, which is made up of a number of modules.

Each module lasts 40 minutes and has 27 multiple choice questions. You will sit the modules back-to-back on the day of the test.

ESAT modules

Imperial courses using the ESAT require all candidates to sit the following modules:

  • Mathematics 1
  • Mathematics 2

If you're only applying to Imperial's Dyson School of Design Engineering, these are the only two ESAT modules you need to sit.

If you're applying to another department, you will also need to sit a third ESAT module – either Chemistry or Physics.

Find out which modules are required for your department of interest in the table below. You will need this information when you book. You will not be able to change the modules you have registered for on the day of the test.

Department Test Module 1 Module 2 Module 3
Aeronautics ESAT Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics
Chemical Engineering ESAT Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Chemistry
Civil and Environmental Engineering ESAT Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics
Dyson School of Design Engineering ESAT Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Not applicable
Electrical and Electronic Engineering ESAT Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics
Mechanical Engineering ESAT Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics
Physics ESAT Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Physics

How the test is marked

Your final scores are based on the number of correct answers you give. There is no pass or fail so you should aim to do the best you can.

You do not lose marks for wrong answers, so it’s worth attempting all questions.

Test dates

There will be two test sittings for the ESAT for 2026 entry:

  • Test sitting 1: Thursday 9 and Friday 10 October 2025. You can book this test between Thursday 31 July 2025 and Monday 29 September 2025.
  • Test sitting 2: Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 January 2026. You can book this test between Thursday 27 October 2025 and Friday 19 December 2025.

Candidates can book a time slot on any of these test days though please note that tests in China will be available on only one day per test sitting. They will take place on the second day listed above for each test. For more details, please visit the UAT-UK website
