Imperial-TUM Centre for Health Resilience in a Changing Planet

Our planet's environment is shaped by human activities, with the United Nations now defining three interlinked and synergistic planetary crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Launched by Imperial College London and the Technical University of Munich in February 2025, the Centre will bring together interdisciplinary research teams from academia and industry in a convergence science approach to better understand the mechanisms by which environmental changes undermine health resilience, and to develop effective preventive measures – including engineering better products -- to restore the capacity of individuals and communities to maintain health in the context of a changing environment.

The Centre’s first major challenge area is focused on the impact of particle pollutants on human health.  The Centre will develop additional challenge areas every few years, with future work potentially addressing zoonotic viral infections resulting from climate change, among other topics.  Work will span research, innovation, policy engagement, and education.

Prof. Bob Shorten is the Imperial Director of the Centre.
Prof. Percy Knolle is the TUM Director of the Centre.
