Tracking global behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 Behaviour Tracker was a survey launched in partnership with YouGov to capture behaviours and attitudes towards COVID-19. This survey collected data on a fortnightly basis across up to 30 countries between April 2020 and March 2022. Data and insights are publicly available through GitHub, an online dashboard, and +45 policy reports (listed below). Because the data is made publicly available, any researcher can use it without our knowledge, but we estimate the data has been used in dozens of academic publications.

As the most comprehensive dataset of its kind, the project gives researchers and policymakers a clearer picture of attitudes and behaviours related to COVID-19, including vaccine hesitancy, and how these evolved over time, with the aim to empower governments to inform future actions based on evidence. The project led to multiple international collaborations, including working closely with WHO’s Behavioural and Cultural Insights Unit and Professor Jeffrey Sachs from the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Our final report reviewed the full 2 years of survey results. It included nearly half a million people across the 9 countries that were consistently part of the survey (Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and the UK). It identified changes in trust in health authorities and vaccine hesitancy across geographies and over time.
