“Coded Bias“ is an award winning documentary that follows researchers and advocates, principally MIT computer scientist and founder of the Algorithmic Justice League Joy Buolamwini, as they explore how algorithms encode and propagate bias. The documentary touches on other ethical issues in Big Tech, including surveillance through facial recognition, and the perils of computer-based judgement in human evaluation.

Others featured include Weapons of Math Destruction author Cathy O’Neil and members of Big Brother Watch, including Silkie Carlo, in London.

  After the group screening of the documentary, we will have a panel discussion hosted by Andrea E.L Attipoe, a PhD student in the department of Bioengineering and member of Imperial’s Black Doctoral Network. He will be discussing themes from the documentary and future steps forward with Silkie Carlo, a British activist and the director of Big Brother Watch UK featured in the documentary, and Imperial as One‘s Co-Chair, Dr Sarah Essilfie-Quaye whose work with the BAME advisory group aims to support and promote an inclusive workplace, culture of respect, opportunity, unity, transparency, equality, and tackle issues of racism, discrimination, fear, and prejudice.Join us for an informal discussion; everyone is welcome!

PANEL MEMBERS:

Andrea E.L Attipoe
Andrea is a PhD student in the Evolutionary Biomechanics research group. He gained his Bachelors degree at the University of Liège, Belgium as well as his Masters degree in Physics Engineering, focusing on fluid mechanics, microfluidics and physics modelling. Andrea started his PhD in the Department of Bioengineering in October 2018 and is currently investigating how insects manage to run with sticky feet. He is also a member of Imperial’s Black Doctoral Network.

Silkie Carlo
Silkie is the Director of Big Brother Watch, a non-profit British civil liberties and privacy campaigning organisation.She works to uphold rights in the fields of state surveillance, policing technologies, big data, artificial intelligence and free expression online.

Before joining Big Brother Watch in January 2018, Silkie was the Senior Advocacy Officer at Liberty where she led a programme on Technology and Human Rights and launched a legal challenge to the Investigatory Powers Act. She previously worked for Edward Snowden’s official defence fund and whistleblowers at risk. Silkie is also an information security trainer and organises Cryptoparty London. She is the co-author of Information Security for Journalists.

Dr Sarah Essilfie-Quaye
Sarah  is Project Manager in the Research Strategy Team, Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. Sarah is also the Project Director for the Faculty of Medicine Culture Initiatives Management Group and a Co-Chair for Imperial As One, Imperial College London’s Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff network.

Sarah has been part of the Imperial community since 2002, starting as a Research Technician in the Asthma Lab, before progressing into a research career whilst also undertaking a part-time PhD.

After her PhD Sarah made the decision to step away from an academic career. “After a quick investigation I discovered there were no Black female academics at Imperial, I knew the path to Professor was a difficult one for anyone, but this made it feel almost impossible for me. I now regret that decision and wish instead I had felt I had enough support and encouragement to strive to be the first. This is the driving factor behind my involvement with the Race Equality Charter Self-Assessment Team (REC SAT) and Imperial As One. To create an environment at Imperial where everyone feels like they have the chance to make it to the top of their career, whatever their background.”
