What we do

The Risk Management function identifies, evaluates, and mitigates risks that could prevent the achievement of key objectives. Principal risks to Imperial’s mission include financial sustainability, people risks, major projects, research and education, cybersecurity and both physical and digital infrastructure risks.

The embedding of Risk Management into everyday decision-making helps prioritise resources, mitigate risks to Imperial, and fosters a culture of proactive risk awareness across the University, ultimately supporting academic and operational excellence.

Key or principal risks are considered by the University's governance forums to help inform decisions, understand exposure and implement action plans to minismise potential issues. These are assessed and considered at least termly by the Audit and Risk Committee. This is supplemented by divisional or department risk management at a more local level on an ongoing basis.

By systematically addressing risks at the strategic and operational levels, the risk management function safeguards Imperial’s ability to achieve its objectives and maintain its standing as a world-leading research and higher education institution.

Imperial’s risk registers are housed within the CoreStream risk management information system, and risk management documentation is available via the links below.
