PhD researchers in Structures are part of the wider Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, benefiting from a large research-led academic community, shared facilities and cross-disciplinary engagement.

The Structures PhD programme has the largest doctoral research community in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Research spans the full spectrum of structural engineering and structural mechanics, from theoretical and numerical studies to experimental and laboratory-based investigation. PhD researchers are embedded within an active academic environment and benefit from close interaction with staff, fellow students and visiting speakers through a popular research seminar series running throughout the year.

Students have access to shared office space, specialist software, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and the Departmental Library. The programme also offers opportunities for professional development, including training as Graduate Teaching Assistants, participation in conferences, and access to courses in professional skills and career development. The normal duration of study is three to three and a half years, with a standard October intake and flexibility for alternative start dates subject to approval. Successful candidates are awarded the PhD degree together with the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC).
