SpyroDrive is an intelligent, synchronous, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for a bicycle, which automatically changes its gear ratio to ensure the cyclist is always maximally efficient. Its continuous variation means it has no discrete 'gears', but can shift smoothly under load, while the cyclist is pedalling, allowing the cyclist to accelerate at constant pedal rate. The synchronous design improves upon the efficiency and wear characteristics of competing asynchronous CVTs. An on-board electro-mechanical control system interfaces to a smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy such that the rider can alter their desired pedal rate dynamically while cycling.
