The RoboStitch project aims to redesign the sewing machine with the intent for full automation of the sewing process. Manual feeding of fabric into static machines on workbenches will be replaced with a robotic arm whose end effector can stitch directly onto a garment, following the seam path of the garment construction as it is formed on a mannequin. The challenge of the project is to translate the two-thread mechanism of a traditional sewing machine into a compact, dynamic machine.
