The Microbiome, Microscopy and Microfluidics Lab led by Dr Claire Stanley at the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London – the UK’s leading Bioengineering department – has an open position for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in FUNGI-ON-A-CHIP Microfluidics for Microbiology funded by The Leverhulme Trust (3 years fixed term, full-time).

The candidate will conduct world class research using FUNGI-ON-A-CHIP microfluidic technologies. The project “Deciphering the Secret Life of Soil Fungi using Novel Microfluidic Platforms” aims to pursue the next frontier in soil microbiome research by combining microfluidics and microscopy to untangle microbial interaction and communication in the rhizo- and hyphosphere. The overall objective is to engineer microenvironments – using FUNGI-ON-A-CHIP microfluidic technology – to investigate the influence of the physicochemical environment upon the function of mycelial networks. This highly novel and interdisciplinary research project aims to enhance our understanding of important processes in soils and is expected to have a significant impact on the agricultural industry, as well as the health and food industries. The project will also involve close collaboration with the lab of Prof. Pilar Junier (University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland; www.unine.ch/lamun/en/home.html). Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for directing one of the major work packages in the grant and taking the initiative in the planning and execution of the proposed research. You will identify and develop suitable methodologies for the collection and analysis of data, ensuring the validity and reliability of data at all times. Additionally, you will work collaboratively with the Laboratory of Microbiology at the University of Neuchâtel, which will include visits to present and discuss our findings, exchange ideas and learn new techniques where necessary.

You will be encouraged to present your research at international conferences and expected to submit publications to refereed journals as well as project reports to the research sponsor. You will also assist in the supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate research students; in particular overseeing the work of the PhD student aligned with this grant, as well as contribute to the smooth running of the group’s laboratories.

Essential requirements

You will have: 

  • A PhD in (bio)engineering, physical sciences, natural sciences, biological sciences or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
  • Practical experience within a research environment, publication(s) in relevant (refereed) journals and experience of dealing with e.g. collaborators, sponsors
  • Practical experience in a broad range of techniques including microfluidic / Lab-on-a-Chip technology development, microbiological cell culture (e.g. bacteria, fungi), microscopy, image analysis, methodology development, molecular biology
  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
  • The ability to develop and apply new concepts, a creative approach to problem-solving
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to organise own work with minimal supervision, be proactive and meet deadlines
  • The ability to direct the work of a small research team, and motivate others to produce a high standard of work
  • Willingness to work as part of a team, be open-minded and cooperative
  • Willingness to travel both within the UK and abroad to conduct research and attend conferences

This appointment is full time and fixed term for 3 years and is expected to start on/after 1st July 2021.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.
