Job summary

The Mechanics of Materials Division has been awarded funding from Rolls Royce to investigate elastic field and dislocation mechanics modelling to understand problems of crucial importance to next-generation nuclear power generation, and the safe operation and decommissioning of existing nuclear power infrastructure. The technical problems of interest are hydride misfit and ratcheting for delayed hydride cracking in zirconium alloys under thermomechanical loading. Using state-of-the-art facilities, a newly appointed Research Associate will develop dislocation plasticity modelling methods combined with elastic field theory of crystal defects and second phases.

The work will span scales from that of defects in the crystal lattice to that of the microstructure, in order to make engineering scale predictions about material performance and failure; and will build upon recent theoretical advances in defect and dislocation modelling for nuclear materials, and work with an established, custom code base for simulation.

Duties and responsibilities


  • You will develop theoretical and computational models using dislocation mechanics and elastic field theory of crystal defects to predict, characterise, quantify and understand hydride misfit and ratcheting for delayed hydride cracking in zirconium alloys under thermomechanical loading.

  • You will publish modelling methodology, predictions, analysis and interpretation of experimental data in peer-reviewed journals

  • You will work within a large, diverse consortium comprised of universities and industrial stakeholders.

  • You will self-manage your research project; collaborating with and delivering results/reports to the consortium.

Essential requirements


  • You must have (or be close to completing) a PhD in Theoretical and Computational Solid Mechanics, or a closely related discipline, or have equivalent experience.

  • You have a good understanding of continuum mechanics and its underpinning mathematics (e.g. tensor algebra) as well as knowledge of linear elasticity theory (isotropic and anisotropic).

  • You should be proficient in various computer programming languages and have in-depth knowledge of elastic field theory of crystal defects and/or dislocation plasticity modelling.

  • Experience of project management and working within a consortium would be considered an advantage, however this is not essential.

This is a fixed term position for up to 24 months in the first instance.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum.
