Job summary

The research project, led by Prof Marie-Claude Boily, will look into the development and application of mathematical and computational models to assess the impact of HIV self-testing among key populations on the HIV epidemic in West Africa.

This work funded by UNITAID is part of “ATLAS”: a large international and multidisciplinary collaborative programme that aims to promote and deploy HIV self-testing (HIVST) in Ivory Coast, Senegal and Mali among keys populations (e.g. FSW, MSM, PWID) between 2019 and 2021.  ATLAS is carried out in close partnership with the national control programs of each country.

In addition to the implementation objectives, ATLAS incorporates several research objectives based on a set of observational surveys to describe, analyse and understand the social, health, epidemiological and economic effects of the introduction of HIVST in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Senegal to improve testing (accessibility, effectiveness and ethics). These epidemiological and economic surveys will be instrumental in informing the mathematical modelling analysis. 

While the position is advertised as post-doctoral Research Associate, we could offer employment as Research Fellow for a candidate with suitable experience. We would also consider exceptional candidates who don’t have a PhD (as Research Assistant).

Duties and responsibilities

The aim of the mathematical modelling component is to identify those most likely to acquire and transmit HIV and to identify delays in testing and diagnosis; to estimate the population impact of the introduction of HIV self-testing in the three ATLAS countries, at the scale achieved by the ATLAS programme and under possible scale-up scenarios; to estimate the cost-effectiveness of these scale-up scenarios and conduct a sensitivity analysis.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD (for appointment to Research Associate or Fellow) or MSc (for appointment to Research Assistant) in epidemiological modelling, infectious disease epidemiology, ecology, population biology, mathematics, statistics, theoretical physics, computer science or an alternative highly quantitative discipline. Appropriate technical skills and solid working experience are required to perform all the required technical tasks from model development, coding, fitting methods, and data analysis (e.g. C++).

This post is full time and fixed term for 12 months. Imperial College is supportive of flexible working. The College is happy to discuss the possibility of implementing such arrangements for this post, with suitably qualified people, subject to operational requirements.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum.
