This post is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic research team to work on a clinical translational research project entitled “Endothelial Colony Forming Cells as a novel tool for understanding inflammatory vascular phenotype in Rheumatoid Arthritis”. Endothelial Colony Forming Cells (ECFC) are an endothelial cell type which can be derived from peripheral blood, thereby providing access to the endothelium in a non-invasive manner. In this novel study, we aim to further our understanding of how chronic inflammation and treatment affect the endothelium in vivo by evaluating ECFC frequency and phenotype in active RA patients, before and after initiation of immunomodulatory treatment. To do so, a variety of functional and molecular methods will be employed including cell proliferation, endothelial tube formation and inflammatory assays.
The post is initially funded for 12 months by a project grant from the Rosetrees Trust. The appointee will join Professor Justin Mason’s research Group based within the Vascular Science Section of the National Heart and Lung Institute. This project builds upon the section’s extensive experience in endothelial biology and vascular dysfunction in disease. The successful candidate will gain excellent experience in these areas.
Patient recruitment to the study is complete and pre-treatment ECFC have been isolated. Post-treatment follow-up visits are planned for March/April. Therefore, we seek a talented and motivated biologist to work on the experimental and interpretive phases of the study and help to ensure this project makes an impactful contribution to the field.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Designing and executing experiments with endothelial colony forming cells (ECFC) isolated from patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and healthy control volunteers (HC)
- Processing patient and control blood samples, culturing and maintaining ECFC and performing key experiments related to the project
contributing to general laboratory responsibilities such as ordering, equipment maintenance, and generally assist in the smooth running of the Group/Unit’s laboratories and facilities
Recording and maintaining data and information as relevant and appropriate, including patient databases.
Maintaining highly organised and accurate record of patient research samples and experimental work.
Participating in weekly research-in-progress meetings and departmental seminars
Contributing to general lab management tasks including ordering and organisation of consumables, equipment maintenance, cleaning of work areas
Helping with the smooth running of the Group/Unit’s laboratories and facilities with other scientists, clinicians, technicians and students within the laboratories
- At Research Associate level: a PhD or equivalent in molecular and cell biology: candidates with demonstrable experience in biological science will be considered
- At Research Assistant level: a BSc or equivalent in a biological discipline with demonstrable experience in laboratory skills and practice
- Proven experience in primary cell culture
- Proven experience in at least one functional and/or molecular analysis method e.g. ELISA, qPCR, proliferation assay
- Experience with laboratory logs and data management
This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for up to 12 months based at the Hammersmith Campus, London.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.
