We are seeking an excellent researcher to work on the epidemiology and evolution of poliovirus, including analysis of global environmental and acute flaccid paralysis surveillance data maintained by the WHO alongside genetic sequence data generated by the Global Polio Laboratory Network. The post is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and focuses on the epidemiology of vaccine-derived polioviruses in Africa and Asia and the impact of improved surveillance and new vaccines.
You will work closely with the polio team in the Vaccine Epidemiology Research Group and have access to excellent peer support from other members of the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis. You will also communicate and meet with task teams from the GPEI and with staff at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The post would be especially suited to someone with experience in epidemiological or evolutionary analysis of infectious disease data but we will also consider applications from enthusiastic individuals with appropriate mathematical, statistical or bioinformatics skills. You will be expected to produce high quality research, submit publications to scientific journals, attend and present at conferences, and attend meetings with researchers and policy-makers relevant to the field.
Duties and responsibilities
Key objectives are as follows:
- To conduct statistical, epidemiological and evolutionary analysis of poliovirus surveillance data
- To pursue research on infectious disease epidemiology and inference from data
- To interact with other members of the research group and with our national and international partners
You should have a PhD in epidemiology, evolution or related quantitative discipline or a closely related discipline with strong mathematical and/or statistical skills and an interest in infectious disease epidemiology and/or vaccine research. You should have practical experience within a research environment and have experience of dealing with sponsors. Your ability to implement advances statistical methods in R, C/C++, or similar programming language is essential to this role.
This role is offered on a full time, fixed term basis until 30 June 2023 in the first instance. Imperial College is supportive of flexible working. The College is happy to discuss the possibility of implementing such arrangements for this post, with suitably qualified people, subject to operational requirements.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum
