The High Energy Physics Group at Imperial College London invites applications for a Research Associate to study the exciting area of leptonic CP violation using the T2K and DUNE experiments. 

Duties and responsibilities

We are looking for someone to take a leading role in developing and performing neutrino oscillation analyses for the Japan-based T2K experiment. You will also extend the state of the art MaCh3 analysis software framework for use in the DUNE experiment, which is under construction in the USA, and develop DUNE’s oscillation analysis. Later in the post you will carry out R&D for the data acquisition (DAQ) of DUNE's High-Pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (HPgTPC) near detector.

The research programme will be conducted in Imperial's Blackett Laboratory as well as at Fermilab and SURF in the USA, J-PARC in Japan, CERN in Switzerland, and collaborating UK institutes.

Imperial is a leader in neutrino oscillation analysis, HPgTPCs and DAQ. We are searching for a candidate to build on this to ensure the group's expertise is transferred to the next-generation of long-baseline neutrino experiments.

Essential requirements

You must hold a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or have an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience.

You must have the following essential criteria:

  • Familiarity with HEP data analysis techniques, including Monte Carlo techniques and statistical analysis
  • Experience of software development and use, particularly C++
  • Experience in leadership or evidence of future leadership potential
  • A strong research record with clearly defined individual contributions
  • Experience in taking initiative and/or developing own ideas independently

In addition, it would be desirable if you had:

  • Experience with hardware and/or detector operations in a HEP environment
  • Experience of operating hardware based on state-of-the-art FPGAs in prototype systems
  • Experience of firmware development and use
  • Experience of working on the design and construction of HEP detectors
  • Experience of working in the environment of a large international science collaboration
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.

The post is available for two years in the first instance.

The post will be based in London but will require regular travel to Fermilab in the USA, J-PARC in Japan and CERN in Switzerland. Other UK and foreign travel is likely to be required.

The Imperial College High Energy Physics Group has a strong ongoing experimental programme encompassing the T2K, Super-Kamiokande and future Hyper-Kamiokande experiments in Japan; the future neutrino oscillation experiment DUNE at Fermilab and SURF in the USA; the CMS and LHCb experiments at the LHC; the search for sterile neutrinos with SoLid in Belgium; the search for dark matter with the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment in the USA; the search for charged lepton flavour violation with COMET in Japan; the MICE experiment in the UK; and SHiP and SuperNEMO activities and the development of future experiments. There are also significant accelerator, phenomenology and Grid computing programmes.
