You will work on a photonic quantum simulation project, funded as part of the UK Quantum Technology Hub in Computing & Simulation (QCS Hub). This project aims to develop methodology and hardware for quantum simulations using light, capable of tackling meaningful calculations at a scale competitive with classical digital computers. In particular, we aim to develop a photonic simulator that targets problems in chemical and condensed matter systems. To do so, we will build on recent advances in integrated photonics, pulsed quantum optics, state engineering, and quantum architectures.
As an initial task, we will build upon optical models of coupled electronic-vibrational systems and connect these to recent theoretical work on tensor networks and Gaussian-state sampling. This framework will then be used to further develop simulation tasks that leverage near-term photonic capabilities. In tandem, we will undertake laboratory experiments to investigate key aspects of the simulation protocols and to develop methods that characterize and mitigate errors due to realistic device imperfections.
Duties and responsibilities
You will contribute to independent and original research, submit publications to refereed journals and assist with the administration of the Research Group. You will be self-motivated and be able to work alongside and aid graduate students. Interdisciplinary research and collaboration with theoreticians in other groups of the Department of Physics is an important aspect of this project
• Hold a PhD, (or equivalent) in ultrafast quantum optics or in a closely related discipline
• Evidence of outstanding promise and originality in research, demonstrated by a good publication record, commensurate with your career stage
• Proven research experience in experimental atomic and optical physics
• Experience in quantum information science and quantum computation is desirable
• An ability to work independently.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.
