The National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) is dedicated to harnessing science to improve heart and lung health for all.
The NHLI is one of the largest departments in the world undertaking heart, lung and vascular research. Our mission is to discover, educate and improve heart and lung health for all.
We continue to retain our position as a highly respected centre for research, development and education in cardiovascular and respiratory science. We achieve this through a powerful blend of world-leading clinical and non-clinical academics, cutting-edge facilities, inspiring teaching and an extensive network of both internal and international collaborations.
NHLI researchers aim to deliver life-changing, innovative interventions to cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Heart failure, breathlessness, respiratory infections, asthma and heart-rhythm disorders are amongst the most common conditions that can affect everybody and anybody, to name but a few. In addition, due to our co-location with the Royal Brompton and Hammersmith Hospitals, the NHLI is in the privileged position to be able to undertake vital research on rare and often neglected diseases, such as cystic fibrosis (CF), paediatric lung diseases, congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension that have a major impact on many lives.
The NHLI seeks to design and deliver effective and enjoyable education, aligned with the evolving needs of employers and in the context of a collaborative, open teaching culture. Our educational offering allows students to develop skills and training experience that both increase their employment potential and stimulate responsible social engagement.
As a community, the NHLI is inclusive and collegiate. Our People and Culture team empower our people to succeed and foster a sense of belonging through a range of activities and initiatives, including staff networks, social events and professional coaching.
