Summer internship program

Every summer, iCARE hosts interns through the HDR UK Black Internship Programme, delivered in partnership with 10,000 Black Interns.

Why does this matter?

Health data science is shaping the future of healthcare, from improving our understanding of disease to developing better treatments and more personalised care.

Yet Black professionals remain underrepresented across health data science and research, reflecting longstanding inequalities and barriers to education, professional networks, mentoring and career opportunities.

The  HDR UK Black Data Science Internship Programme helps address these barriers by giving Black students and graduates meaningful research experience, professional networks and opportunities to develop their careers.

By supporting the next generation of Black talent, the programme brings diverse perspectives and experiences into our research community, helping us ask better questions, challenge assumptions and develop research that better reflects and serves the communities it aims to improve.

What does the internship offer?

As an iCARE intern, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in real-world health data research, working alongside members of the iCARE team and gaining an insight into how data and research can be used to improve healthcare.

During the internship, you may have the opportunity to:

• Work on a specific iCARE research project and contribute to ongoing work.
• Learn how health data is collected, analysed and used in research.
• Develop practical skills in data, research and communication.
• Meet researchers and professionals across both the College and Trust and build your network.
• Learn about different career pathways in health data science and research.
• Take part in talks, workshops and other activities designed to support your professional development.

No two cohorts are exactly the same, and the projects and experiences available will vary each year.
