Emergencies are rare, but being prepared makes a big difference. Knowing what to do and where to find support helps you stay safe, respond calmly, and assist others if needed.
This page brings together practical advice and resources to help you prepare for unexpected situations on campus and beyond.
Martyn's Law
Martyn’s Law (Protect Duty) – also known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises Act) – is new legislation designed to improve public safety by requiring organisations to be better prepared for, and protected against, the risk of terrorism. For universities, this means having proportionate security measures in place, such as risk assessments, staff training, and emergency procedures, to help keep our community safe.
Be prepared
Every building at Imperial has its own safety procedures, including evacuation routes and assembly points. Take a few minutes to:
-
Familiarise yourself with the nearest exits to your lecture room, lab, or office
-
Note the location of fire alarms and first aid kits
-
Follow the instructions of fire wardens and Security staff during drills or incidents
- Check if there are any additional local safety procedures you need to follow in your area (for example, lab-specific guidance or departmental rules)
The SafeZone app connects you directly with Security in an emergency. It also allows us to send you alerts during serious incidents.
-
Use the emergency button to get immediate help
-
Receive instant notifications during major incidents or campus-wide emergencies
- Check in if you are working alone or outside normal hours
Being prepared is about confidence as well as knowledge.
-
Complete the ACT Awareness training to learn how to stay safe in rare but serious situations such as terrorism-related incidents
-
Attend safety briefings and drills when offered in your department
-
Keep your contact details up to date in university systems so you can receive important alerts
What to do in an emergency
- Stay calm and follow instructions from Security or emergency services
- On campus, call Imperial Security first (or use the SafeZone app) so we can coordinate the response and guide emergency services
- If you are off campus, call 999 and ask for the service you need (fire, police, ambulance)
- Help others if it’s safe to do so, especially anyone unfamiliar with the building
