Staff spotlight – David Brown, White City Service Manager
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
I grew up on a council estate with my mum and started working Saturday jobs at an early age - an experience that instilled a strong work ethic that still drives me today.
That foundation became the engine behind my ambition to progress and achieve things that once felt out of reach. I initially trained as a chef and worked my way up to Selfridges on Oxford Street. I’ve always believed that if you apply yourself without doubt or limitation, you can achieve more than you imagine.
After 12 years in hospitality, I was ready for a new challenge and moved into security. Starting at entry level, I progressed to Emergency Response Team Supervisor, working on contracts including Marconi, HSBC’s London headquarters, the Trocadero Centre in Leicester Square, and the Lord Mayor of London’s security team, before moving into close protection.
What inspired you to join the Security and Community Safety team at Imperial?
When I looked into Imperial’s structure, I saw the opportunity for a career, not just a job. The ability to progress, whether upward or sideways into different roles and departments, was a real draw.
Imperial’s reputation speaks for itself, and being part of an institution of that standing genuinely means something.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed significant change and growth. More recently, the renewed focus, energy and sense of purpose across the university have been impressive. From wellbeing initiatives to the development of security and support services, the ambition and standards continue to rise, and it’s something I’m proud to be part of.
What does your current role involve?
No two days are the same and I learn new skills and encounter fresh challenges daily. After 24 years at Imperial, I’ve learned that there is always more than one way to solve a problem - and that experience, collaboration and perspective are often the key to finding the right solution.
People, places and everything in between each bring their own unique challenges. White City, Burlington Danes and Hammersmith together cover a significant footprint, but the support around me makes a real difference. Looking ahead, I’m involved in several exciting projects and look forward to seeing them come to fruition.
What do you enjoy about your role?
In a word - everything. The colleagues I work alongside and the members of the public I engage with keep the role dynamic and never predictable. Seeing security at Imperial from a management perspective has given me a deeper appreciation of the challenges our teams navigate every day. We have a strong foundation in place, and the opportunity to help shape our future direction and drive continued progress is genuinely exciting.
What are your current priorities?
My immediate focus is settling fully into the role while maintaining a healthy work–life balance and performing at my best in both. I’m learning every day, and knowledge really is power.
Above all, my priority is the safety of our security teams, students, staff and visitors, ensuring we provide a service that safeguards everyone across our campuses. I’m also focused on identifying and implementing practical improvements in both security and community safety - from enhancing CCTV capability to reviewing services such as the shuttle bus.
If you could fix one thing, what would it be?
It’s hard to pinpoint just one thing to fix. Changes and improvements are happening across multiple areas at once and focusing on one issue can mean overlooking progress elsewhere. Everything is evolving, and with Martyn’s Law on the horizon, our operational focus is only becoming sharper and more defined.
What is one thing people may not know about you?
If I told you, that wouldn’t be a secret…and you know how you keep a secret? You don't tell anyone.
Thanks for the interview.
But seriously, very few know I am a very good DJ.
