Cell \ Tissue culture

Genomics and Proteomics

For Genotyping, DNA and RNA extractions, mRNA analysis and including the Zeiss PALM microdissection

Histology

Sectioning and staining - Microtome, cryostats, Vibratomes, light microscopy and the Tissuecyte (a Two photon whole tissue imaging system)

Microbiology

For cloning, bacterial, lentivirus and AAV work - shaking incubators, microbiological safety cabinets, light and fluorescence imaging

Molecular Bioengineering Teaching Laboratory

Based in South Kensington, the home of the Bioengineering undergraduate teaching laboratory, student project areas and may be open for use outside of timetabled classes on request.

Cryostorage, Freeze Dryer and Liquid Nitrogen

We have several communal fridges (+4c) and freezers (-20c, -80c, -150c) in the Department, in addition to Liquid Nitrogen storage as required.

Makerspaces, Mechanical and Electrical workshops

From small scale to large machine shop fabrication, our range of expertise and facilities are aimed at a diverse range of usages from medical device manufacture, to larger scale prosthetists devices and beyond.

Microfabrication

Sponsored by CRUK, this microfabrication and prototyping facility offers SU-8 photolithography, Characterisation and post processing and PDMS microchip fabrication

Bionanofabrication Clean Room

Designed for use of state of the art microfabrication equipment and technology in a safe controlled environment, including ALD, ICP Deposition and ICP etching Plasma cluster

Imaging

A selection of light, fluorescence and confocal microscopes, from bench top light microscopy to multi-photon confocal, including the Imperial College London - Leica imaging Hub

Bionano-Characterisation

Dedicated to the identification and characterisation of molecules, compounds and larger objects. Including high specification HPLCs, a mass spectrometer and a microCT scanner.

Injury and Reconstruction Biomechanics Test Suite

Mechanical testing, imaging & analysis equipment for the transformational research in musculoskeletal, orthopaedic, and injury biomechanics. Ability to test spinal implants to ASTM standards or using bespoke protocols

We are an open and collaborative department spanning multiple campuses (South Kensington, White City), with world leading equipment, lab and workshop space open not only to our students, researchers and staff, but also to our collaborators and those external to the department such as other departments, institutions and external users / industry.
