Non-Invasive Alternative for Newborn Screening

Newborn babies in the neonatal intensive care unit need blood taken from the heel to detect a number of serious diseases. Our non-invasive, continuous monitoring device reveals detrimental fluctuations in the patient’s vitals, allowing us to eliminate the need for invasive newborn testing altogether. The introduction of this technology to the healthcare industry would improve hospital efficiency and most importantly, reduce the negative physical and psychological implications on families while their newborn is in intensive care.

Superhydrophobic Haemostatic Devices

MRes MDDE Elevator Pitch 2022-23 - Daniel Spragg

Bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death after traumatic injury. We are developing advanced wound dressings incorporating a superhydrophobic haemostatic material to control bleeding. Our technology accelerates clotting while also mitigating wound adhesion and secondary bleeding. We are initially targeting medical professionals in prehospital and emergency care settings in the United States.

New Diagnostic for Multiple Sclerosis

MRes MDDE Elevator Pitch 2022-23 - Erica Tapia

Our diagnostic device draws conclusions based on the blood sample's physicochemical properties by using spectroscopy and pattern recognition. It will be easily integrated into doctors' offices and hospitals, drastically reducing the time to diagnose multiple sclerosis.

Lactate in Breath

MRes MDDE Elevator Pitch 2022-23 - Mikail Atkas

Our device is a handheld breath analyser that is capable of measuring lactate levels. Our objective is to utilise this device as a pre-hospital point-of-care diagnostic tool for stratifying sepsis severity, enabling early intervention while potentially saving lives and resources.

Aptamer Based Growth Factor Delivery for Nonunion Fractures

MRes MDDE Elevator Pitch 2022-23 - Shani Katz

About 100,000 fractures will become nonunion in the United States each year, affecting people of all ages and severely limiting their ability work. Our technology uses a patented technology to deliver growth factors to the region while minimizing the spread to other areas.

A Cure for Scleroderma

MRes MDDE Elevator Pitch 2022-23 - Sharon Lau

Our pharmaceutical treatment hinders collagen overproduction in scleroderma by targeting a small molecule within the disease pathway. It is the first targeted treatment to restore immune system balance in scleroderma patients.

Brain Computer Interface Delivered with Microrobots

MRes MDDE Elevator Pitch 2022-23 - Shujhat Khan

We have developed wireless, miniaturised, MRI-safe sensors known as brain computer interfaces that are able to pick up electrical signals from precise regions in the brain and bypass neurological injury. Our technology has the potential to treat a wide range of neurological conditions and restore motor and sensory functions. The initial aim of our technology is to help patients with paralysis so they may regain their independence.

Infection Detecting Sternal Wires

MRes MDDE Elevator Pitch 2022-23 - Tuvana Baktiroglu

In open heart surgeries, surgeons cut the patient’s chest (sternal) bone to reach the heart and sew it with sternal wires at the end of the surgery. Sternal infection is a post-operative complication that is complex to treat, mainly because it is diagnosed late. Our technology allows early detection of infections through embedded sensors in sternal wires, allowing quick medical intervention.
