The MRes Bioengineering programme is a full-time course, covering a full calendar year. The taught component is primarily delivered in term one. Terms two, three and the summer are dedicated to the research project, although some "Topics in Bioengineering" courses are taught in term two.

Taught element

Students study three taught modules, worth just under 20% of the overall degree.

Computational and Statistical Methods for Research (50%)

Provides a foundation in Python programming and statistical methods to prepare students for their extended research project.

Frontiers in Bioengineering Research (50%)

Introduces students to the breadth and variety of research in Bioengineering and develops presentation, writing and critical analysis skills.

Topics in Biomedical Engineering (pass/fail)

Students chose two level 7 modules offered by the department, based on relevance to their specific research project. These modules are assessed by a written report.

Research element

The research element makes up over 80% of your MRes and provides an opportunity to demonstrate your advanced knowledge and write extensively on an emerging research theme.

There are four assessed components:

  • Planning for Bioengineering Research (20%, submitted at the start of spring term)
  • Research project:
    • Poster presentation (12%, due end of summer term)
    • Thesis (56%, due early September)
    • Oral exam (12%, due mid-late September)

We encourage students to contact potential research project supervisors (see our staff by research area) before application, to ensure that there is a suitable project available. You should name at least one supervisor in your personal statement when you apply.
