Abstract image

Are you passionate about photography?

Our departmental photo competition celebrates the visual side of engineering. We want to provide an opportunity for people in the department to exhibit their photography work and to have fun developing their photography skills.

The competition is open only to students, staff and alumni from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London.

Timeline

The deadline for submissions was 16 October 2023 at midnight. Please keep an eye on this space for information on how judging is progressing.

Submissions format

The only type of images accepted are photographs. Previously published photographs, not created specifically for the competition are also eligible.

We will only consider entries submitted before the specified deadline through the form provided specifically for this purpose.

Please note that if you are selected as a winner, you will need to provide us with a 300dpi resolution file of your image that can be printed in minimum A2 size.

Each participant can submit up to three entries.

Photos may be black and white or in colour, taken with any kind of camera or device. Minor adjustments are allowed, such as minor changes in cropping, sharpening, contrast, etc. Significantly altered or artistically enhanced photos are not accepted. AI-generated images are not accepted. The judges may request the original file/RAW/negative of your photo to verify this.

Competition Criteria

This year the competition has two categories:

  • “Engineering on your travels”- Interesting engineering-related sights you’ve spotted on your holidays.
  • “Wildcard”- any photos related to your work or studies in the department; fun, unconventional, not so serious entries are encouraged

If taken on campus, images must adhere to College rules on PPE use: in a space that requires lab coats and/or goggles, PPE must be used consistently and correctly by all those who appear in the photo.

You are welcome to submit photographs that have been taken any time between January 2023 and the submission date.

Prizes

  • Our judges will choose a prize winner in each category, worth £150 each, a runner-up in each category, worth £100 each, and one overall winner for the competition, worth £200.
  • We will also award a People's Choice prize worth £150 based on public votes.

Winning entries will be exhibited on our website. We also aim to display the work of all photo competition winners on campus. Prizes will only be awarded subject to receiving a high enough number of submissions and their quality standard being sufficient for display.
