This page provides general information about what to expect as an exchange student.
Your home institution can tell you if you are eligible for a place in Mechanical Engineering and how to apply. Once we have accepted your application, we will email you more detailed information which is relevant to the current academic year.
Choosing your modules
We offer exchange students a choice between the Advanced Stream or the Intermediate Stream.
You'll be given access to recordings of past lectures and module overviews to help you make your decisions. Once you've chosen your modules, you'll complete a Learning Agreement, get it signed by your home institution, and submit it to the Department.
We'll review your Learning Agreement and confirm which modules you can enrol in. All modules are subject to availability, so while we will try to accommodate your preferences, you might not get all your first choices.
Advanced and Intermediate streams
- Choose from third and fourth year (ME34) modules
- Choose engineering modules from outside the Department of Mechanical Engineering via the Interdepartmental Exchange (IDX)
- Choose up to two non-engineering modules
You can view the list of available modules on the ME34 module selection webpages.
- Choose from second year (ME2) modules
- Assigned to an ME2 tutorial group
- Cannot choose modules via the Interdepartmental Exchange (IDX)
- Choose up to one non-engineering module
You can view the list of available modules on the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate study page.
Your first few weeks at Imperial
You'll attend an Exchange Students Induction on the first day of term. We'll answer any questions you may have, and introduce you to the Department Exchange Coordinator who will also be your personal tutor.
Throughout the first week of term, you'll attend induction lectures and sessions relevant to your chosen modules.
The undergraduate office will be available to support you as you settle in. You can drop in any time for help with navigating your timetable, or Imperial systems and virtual learning platforms.
