Head of Communications
I was on Imperial's Management Training Scheme between 2003 and 2006 and undertook six-month placements working with the College Secretary and Deputy Rector, and then in the Registry, Strategy and Planning Division and Faculty of Natural Sciences. Among the projects I was involved in were:
- Writing Imperial's Access Agreement - a document demonstrating the College's commitment to outreach work and detailing the support and bursaries available to prospective students. Access Agreements are required for institutions who wish to charge tuition fees for full-time home/EU undergraduates above the standard level.
- The development of Imperial's Strategy 2006-09
- A restructuring project
- Acting as Clerk to a panel assessing whether a student was fit to practise medicine in accordance with the College procedure
I'm now the Head of Communications at Imperial, working within the Communications Division. I’m responsible for publicising College-wide news and announcements externally and to the College’s 6,000 staff using channels including our newspaper, Reporter, and the staff briefing, an email sent out to all staff every fortnight. I also assist senior staff with their communications to the College community and work on specific projects, which have in the past included producing a short film to introduce new staff to Imperial.
I would highly recommend Imperial’s Management Training Scheme to anyone interested in working in higher education. I gained many new skills through the variety of work across the placements and by the end of the Scheme had a valuable overview of the College's operations – extremely useful in my current role!
