Job summary

Imperial College London is looking for a Head of Business Continuity.

Business Continuity Management plays an essential role in supporting academic and professional services departments to achieve excellence.

This is a high visibility leadership role with a far reaching remit that requires an individual who is able to operate at both a strategic and operational level. Reporting to the Director of Risk Management, you will be responsible for delivering a first class crisis management process and business continuity management system across the College, in combination with driving and embedding best practice and innovation in the field.

Duties and responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities are to:

1. Further develop, maintain and co-ordinate the College’s business continuity procedures, liaising with senior management across the College.

2. The post holder will be expected to work closely with Department Operations Managers and Heads of Department to:

  • Improve awareness and understanding of the business continuity procedures and the actions required of them.
  • Gather feedback and review the procedures.
  • Develop proposals for changes to current procedures for consideration by the Risk and Business Continuity Steering Committee.

3. Implement the business continuity procedures across the College and:

  • Work with the NHS trusts on the College’s medical campuses to integrate College and NHS Trust plans. The post holder will be expected to meet with the emergency planning lead of each campus NHS trust and agree how the Trust/College procedures interface to provide a unified response.
  • Work with departments to develop and review a meaningful Business Impact Analysis and appropriate mitigations to aid resilience.
  • Ensure departments maintain appropriate contact lists and business continuity plans.

4. Support further development of pragmatic incident response plans and escalation arrangements across the College.

5. Support major events with planning and business continuity arrangements.

6. Review and improve the crisis management plan and supporting procedures.

7. Work with the College Communications Division to maintain appropriate communication arrangements for disruptive incidents.

8. Organise business continuity training and exercises. At least one College crisis management plan exercise to be undertaken annually and other department exercises as required.

9. Liaise with neighbours in the local resilience forums to collaborate and share knowledge.

10. Identify and monitor threats through regular horizon scanning and work with third-parties to further investigate where necessary. Raise awareness of potential causes of disruptive incidents with stakeholders so they can prepare as appropriate.

11. Produce progress reports for the Risk and Business Continuity Steering Committee.

Essential requirements

As this is a high visibility leadership role with a far reaching remit, it is essential you have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a business continuity role and that you have experience developing response and crisis management plans within a large matrix organisation.

You will need to have strong influencing skills at senior levels and be both highly analytical, but also have the ability to operate at a strategic level. Strong communication skills, the ability to innovate, adapt positively to change and excellent report writing skills are also essential.

A relevant business continuity qualification such as CBCI or MBCI would be desirable.
