An opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to work on a Royal Society funded Newton Advanced Fellowship project in collaboration with Zhejiang University (ZJU) China. This will involve contributing to experimental geotechnical laboratory and field studies carried out in conjunction with both ZJU and the ALPACA Joint Industry Project. The latter is a major research project that is being advanced in association with University of Oxford, funded by EPSRC and Industry. Professor R J Jardine is the Principal Investigator on both projects. The studies are directed towards two important topics related to Sustainable Civil Engineering. The first covers the cost-effective design of foundations for offshore wind-turbines, especially those for chalk dominated sites, while the second is also concerned with the long-term effects of load cycling imposed by highway and rail wheel loading. This is a fixed term appointment that will commence from December 2018 or later and extend up to end of February 2020.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be expected to undertake a broad range of experimental work effectively, while making both original and independent contributions to the research, as well as persistence in overcoming any potential problems. The scope of work will include undertaking experiments with advanced stress-path triaxial, hollow cylinder, resonant column and ring shear equipment in the laboratory, testing high quality samples of intact chalk and stiff clays. You may also be required to assist with complex trial pit sampling operations and will support static and cyclic pile testing campaigns, working under potentially difficult site conditions. You will also carry out intensive analysis of the data obtained from the laboratory experiments, as well as the fibre-optic and other field instrumentation.
The work will be advanced in conjunction with academic colleagues from Imperial College, Oxford University, Zhejiang University, specialist subcontractors in carrying out these tasks in the field and the research sponsors. Your role will include ensuring effective liaison between these various research partners. You may be asked to undertake short duration visits to China where you may need to work in Mandarin Chinese.
You will also make major contributions to the reporting of the work for both the project sponsors and the preparation of results in conference and journal papers. Finally, you will be expected to provide modest contributions in support of MEng or MSc teaching in geotechnical topics at Imperial College.
You must have a good undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, ideally a specialist geotechnical MSc (or equivalent) and have completed a PhD (or equivalent) on an experimental geotechnical topic before the start of employment.
You will have previous experience in the following areas:
- A proven track record of advanced laboratory experimentation, including experience with equipment such as stress-path triaxial, hollow cylinder, resonant column and ring shear apparatus
- Experience of undertaking challenging field work, working with practical engineers and technicians in an English-speaking environment
- An ability to analyse experimental findings rigorously, developing and working with purpose-written Excel and/or Matlab tools
- Excellent team working and communications skills, ideally including a facility with Mandarin Chinese
- An ability to write well and speak fluently in English
- A track record of involvement in high quality geotechnical publications.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £33,380-£35,061 per annum.
