Applications are invited for a Research Associate (RA) position within the Control and Power Research Group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering to work on an upcoming project entitled Technology Transformation to Support Flexible and Resilient Local Energy Systems. The project is in collaboration with universities in the UK and China. We are seeking a postdoctoral RA on stability of electrical power networks containing large numbers of power electronic interfaces. We are looking for someone to start March 2020 or soon after.

Duties and responsibilities

The RA will lead the technical effort to define a modelling framework in which small- and large-signal stability can be assessed for electrical power networks in which very large numbers of power electronic interfaced sources are present. With the framework established stability criteria will be assessed and verified against simulation studies and laboratory experiments. Collaboration will be needed with partners addressing new converter designs and fault detection algorithms, including periods of secondment. Involvement in teaching is not mandatory but there will be opportunities for interested candidates.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate should have completed or be near completion of a PhD in power electronics or power network control. A thorough understanding of modelling of power converter control systems and physical plant is essential. Experience of testing power converters in the tens of kilowatt range is desirable.

The project is a consortium composed of academic and research staff from Imperial College London, Cardiff University, Zhejiang University, Tsinghua University, Hefei University of Technology and various industrial partners in the UK. It addresses a wide range of issues concerning how smart local energy systems might facilitate decarbonisation in urban areas including multi-energy system optimisation, decentralised control, power electronics for network reconfiguration and microgrid operation. Within this broad project a key topic is how to control and protect future electricity networks where all, or almost all, generators, loads and networks controllers use power electronic interfaces. The ambition is to create for such networks a comprehensive method for analysing stability and to make recommendations for how stability might be ensured in networks with a variety of equipment providers.
