The Dynamics group & Vibration University Technology Centre (VUTC) at Imperial College London is looking to hire a researcher in Machine Learning. Supported by CornerStone, a partnership co-funded by the EPSRC & Rolls-Royce and collaborating with the Universities of Nottingham & Oxford, the postholder will undertake fundamental research that will enable the UK to remain at the forefront of aircraft propulsion throughout the transition to all-electric flight.
This position offers the opportunity to join a research group with more than 20 academics and researchers, and to collaborate with the other academic and industrial partners of the CornerStone project. The postholder will be working with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which has an outstanding international reputation for both its research and its teaching. In the 2014 REF assessment, the Department was ranked second across the UK.
Duties and responsibilities
- You will conduct world-leading research on the development and exploitation of physics-guided machine learning techniques to capture energy transfers and vibration pathways across an aircraft engine.
- You will initially demonstrate the developed algorithms on several numerical benchmark problems before tackling a real-life, jet engine available in our Dynamics laboratory.
- You will be expected to submit publications to top-tier refereed journals and publicise your research results at conferences and workshops.
To apply for this position, you must have experience, including a proven publication track-record, in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, data processing, nonlinear dynamics, vibration, and rotor dynamics.
You should also have:
- A first degree (Research Assistant) or PhD degree (Research Associate) in an area pertinent to the research subject.
- Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, Julia and Matlab.
- The ability and desire to work closely with both academic and industrial research colleagues and project partners.
This is a fixed term position up to 21 months in the first instance.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.
