Job summary

The role of Communications Officer has been created to support and enhance the activities in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering.  

You will develop and maintain the Departmental website. You will manage the Department’s digital communications including social media and will take a lead role in a variety of internal and external communications for audiences including prospective students (Undergraduate, MSc and PhD), current students, and staff.  

This varied role will require an enthusiastic and proficient person able to manage multiple projects at a time. The post-holder must be proactive in their approach to their duties and be able to work with minimum supervision. The post involves a high level of interaction with staff of all levels as well as students, and the post-holder must combine a professional approach with a friendly and welcoming manner. 

Duties and responsibilities

As part of your duties you will be required to:

  • Develop, monitor and manage the Department’s web pages including coordinating visual, audio and written content 
  • Support the Department’s marketing, communication, public engagement and outreach 
  • Source, write, edit and produce engaging digital content, stories, blogs and features 
  • Support the Department’s summer schools, open days and workshops and contribution to Faculty and College public engagement and outreach activities 

Essential requirements

You should have: 

  • A degree or equivalent, ideally in communications or similar field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience of developing and maintaining websites
  • Experience of writing content for different audiences and across a variety of media channels, including social media 
  • Experience of using web analytics tools and producing reports
  • Experience of communicating scientific information to academic and lay audiences

This is a fixed-term (6 month – with possible extension), part time position for 17.5 hours per week.
