Job summary

The Resilient Information Systems Security Group (RISS) in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London is seeking a Research Associate to work in the area of Cybersecurity and Resilience within the context of the Concordia (https://www.concordia-h2020.eu) project..

The post will be based in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London at the South Kensington Campus. The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities, and has consistently been awarded the highest research rating. In the 2014 REF assessment, the Department was ranked third (1st in the Research Intensity table published by The Times Higher) and was rated as "Excellent" in the previous national assessment of teaching quality.

Duties and responsibilities

Our particular aim is to model and reason about the security and resilience of systems with particular focus on the software and networking infrastructure of dynamic systems such as fleets of autonomous aerial vehicles. We are particularly interested in the analysis of the propagation of cyber-attacks, their impact upon the operation of the system and the adaptation of the system in response to an attack to preserve its operation. This requires a modelling and simulation approach that combines models of threat and attack propagation such as attack graphs with models of the system operation and interconnection. Aspects of system safety and system validation can also be taken into account. The postholder may also need to engage in other research and collaboration activities within the context of the Concordia project and the RISS group.

There will be opportunities to collaborate with other project partners, industrial as well as academic. There will also be opportunities to collaborate with other researchers and PhD students in the RISS group (https://rissgroup.org).

Essential requirements

Applicants will need to have a strong background in one or more of the following research areas and techniques:

  • Computer Security, Systems Design for Computer Security and Resilience.
  • Threat modelling and attack modelling techniques e.g. attack graphs, attack trees.
  • System modelling and simulation for dynamical systems
  • Probabilistic graphical models.
  • Stochastic modelling and stochastic processes.

You should have or be close to completion of a PhD degree (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area, i.e., Computing or Engineering.

You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, enjoy working in collaboratively and be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision and prioritise work to meet deadlines. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in the relevant areas.

Please see job description for full list of requirements.

The post is based in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London on the South Kensington Campus. The post holder may be required to travel occasionally to attend project meetings and to work collaboratively with the project partners.
