Job summary

Applications are invited for a fully funded 24 month position at the Research Associate (PostDoc) level. The post is funded by the EPSRC, grant number EP/W032643/1,  “Distributed Quantum Computing and Applications”. This is a multi-million pounds project aiming at the timely challenge of the design and efficient use of networked clusters of quantum devices. The over-arching goals for this position are to develop quantum algorithms applied to computational fluid dynamics and to demonstrate a quantum advantage when solving the Navier-Stokes equations on distributed quantum computers.

There will be opportunities of close interactions with all the members involved in the project, at ICL and UCL, as well as with the relevant academic and industrial networks of the investigators in the UK, EU, and US. Funding is available for travelling and IT facilities for research-related tasks. You are expected to produce results suitable for presentation in international conferences and publication in leading peer-reviewed journals/conferences, as well as to contribute in securing further funding.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Develop and implement (distributed) quantum algorithms for computational fluid dynamics

  • Disseminate research with peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations (with the other members involved in the project)

  • Develop and maintain an open-source framework of (distributed) quantum algorithms

  • Assist and informally co-supervise one PhD student, who will be working on a similar topic.

Essential requirements

Those appointed at Research Associate level

Hold a PhD (or equivalent doctorate degree) in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computing, or a closely related discipline.

Those appointed at Research Assistant level

A first degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computing, or a closely related discipline.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.

Further information

This post is a fixed-term contract for 18 months from the starting date.

Should you require any further details on the role please contact Sylvain Laizet: s.laizet@imperial.ac.uk

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 - £41,388 per annum.

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023.  Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.  The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.

The College is a proud signatory to the San-Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions, we evaluate applicants on the quality of their work, not the journal impact factor where it is published. For more information, see https://www.imperial.ac.uk/research-and-innovation/about-imperial-research/research-evaluation/

The College believes that the use of animals in research is vital to improve human and animal health and welfare. Animals may only be used in research programmes where their use is shown to be necessary for developing new treatments and making medical advances. Imperial is committed to ensuring that, in cases where this research is deemed essential, all animals in the College’s care are treated with full respect, and that all staff involved with this work show due consideration at every level. http://www.imperial.ac.uk/research-and-innovation/about-imperial-research/research-integrity/animal-research
