Our aim is to develop a new generation of advanced damage-tolerant materials for compressive performance, drawing inspiration both from recent research and biomimetics. Our goal is to design these micro-structures and to then develop suitable prototyping methods to realise them in practice. Finally, we will create relevant prototypes for various industries. You can see examples of Bio-inspired Composite Materials that we have developed in the past here: https://pinholab.cc.ic.ac.uk/
In this position, you will develop an ability to develop and use numerical modelling techniques for simulating fracture in composites, and an ability to conceive, prototype and test bespoke composite materials.
Duties and responsibilities
You will carrying out research in advanced bio-inspired composites, namely to design (numerically or analytically as appropriate) of bio-inspired composite microstructures for improved damage tolerance, to synthesise said micro-structures for the manufacture of specimens, o identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data, and to verify experimentally the predicted performance. Responsibilities also include undertaking project management and/or supervising multi-disciplinary teams and submitting publications to refereed journals and conferences. There will be opportunities for travel and for close interaction with world leading academic/industrial project partners. Please see the job description for a full list.
Essential requirements
You are expected to have a strong publication record, commensurate with their experience.
You are required to have experience and knowledge in the following:
- Fibre-reinforced composites
- Finite elements
- Fracture Mechanics
- Experimental Mechanics
- Research methods and statistical analysis
Essential skills include excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people and ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines.
Those appointed at Research Associate level
Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.
Those appointed at Research Assistant level
A first / masters degree (or equivalent) in Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
Please see the job description for a full list of the person specification.
