The Information Communication Technology (ICT) Department has an opportunity for a Research Computing Support Team Lead.

Here is an opportunity for a technically skilled professional with a solid understanding of high-performance computing to lead a team of high-performance computing specialists. The role will coordinate activities within ICT and the wider college and support teams with planning, impact analysis, scheduling and implementing changes.

This role will lead and manage the development of multiple research computing infrastructure services, including requirements gathering, scheduling, prioritisation, risk management and resource allocation.

RCS’s estate is a large, heterogeneous cluster with both proprietary and commodity clusters. It includes high-throughput capacity, high-end capability, GPU compute and large-memory services and is tailored to support the diverse computing needs of the research community.

For future requirements this role will play a key part in the evaluation and integration of new technology for the provision of HPC. The role involves significant systems development work, including analysis and implementation. You will lead the team and be a key member of Research Computing Services, working with the Head of Research Computing to develop and deliver world-class high-performance computing services to support research.

Duties and responsibilities


  • Lead and manage a team of subject matter experts in research computing.

  • Lead and manage multiple research computing infrastructure development projects, including requirements gathering, scheduling, prioritisation, risk management and resource allocation

  • Lead the installation, configuration, and support for the central HPC services.

  • Lead the development of innovative solutions to continuously improve the Research Computing Services

  • Assist researchers to utilise the HPC resource, compile, and debug code, and use queues

  • Stakeholder management across multiple stakeholders

  • Cost monitoring

  • Communications between Project Delivery teams and customers, facilitating collaboration

  • Deliver a high-quality service through a collaborative approach and outstanding analytical skills.

Essential requirements


  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional experience with significant exposure to research computing infrastructures. 

  • Demonstrable team management and operational experience in a professional research software engineering.

  • Significant experience of managing a diverse team, including determination of capabilities, allocation of tasks, direction, support, guidance, motivation, and management of performance.

  • Knowledge of a broad range of current and evolving IT technologies, architectures and delivery models.
