The MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health brings together scientists from ICL and King’s College and is a world leader in the fields of exposure assessment, large scale epidemiological studies, and molecular epidemiology.
Duties and responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Computational Epidemiologist to join the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Imperial College, and work on STOP, a recently EU-funded H2020 project. STOP (Science & Technology in childhood Obesity Policy (STOP)) is an exciting and innovative project which combines social sciences and molecular medicine in the investigation of obesity in children. It will focus on expanding and consolidating the multi-disciplinary evidence base upon which effective and sustainable policies can be built to prevent and manage childhood obesity and create conditions to translate evidence into policy and impact. The project will identify the critical stages of childhood development which can be efficiently and effectively targeted by interventions. A key focus is on the determinants of childhood obesity including the family environment, dietary habits, physical activity and molecular markers.
The appointee will be responsible for the development of scalable and robust statistical models to enable the in-depth analysis of high throughput data in relation to obesity. This comprises the identification and implementation of computationally optimised models to screen, in various OMICs profiles (inflammatory markers, methylation, metabolomics, and gene expression data), for markers of obesity. The post-holder will also contribute to the development of novel approaches to include both a causal component (e.g. generalised structural equation models) and dynamic features to established profiling techniques to explore the obesity-associated mechanisms driving the life-course individual risk profiles.
You will have a PhD or equivalent in Epidemiology or Biostatistics or Mathematics and a strong understanding of omics and molecular mechanisms, data management, computational and presentation skills. You will have experience of working in large scale epidemiological studies, experience of using multivariate models to screen high-dimensional data and interest in causal inference.
This position is a full-time, fixed term contract for 30 months and will be based at the St Mary's Campus, Paddington.
