Job summary

The post holder will join a European Research Council funded study aimed at the development of novel analytical approaches for the diagnostics of mucosa-associated diseases (MASSLIP).

The mass spectrometry lab at Imperial College is seeking an outstanding research assistant interested in taking on a challenging role with considerable scope for independent scientific achievement and personal growth. The post-holder will be a key member of the research staff supporting the study. Professor Takats has been an international leader in applications of advanced ambient mass spectrometric methods to medicine.

The MASSLIP study includes a number of sub-projects each of them focusing either on certain aspects of mucosal sampling or the diagnostic of a group of diseases. The study employs mostly ambient ionization mass spectrometric (AIMS) methods for the diagnostic and prognostic of infectious diseases, cancer and various immunological diseases. The utilisation of lasers as both surgical instruments, and ionisation mechanisms in mass spectrometry, such as MALDI-ToF MS, is well established. Laser-REIMS is a novel developed concept that replaced the diathermic iknife in REIMS and is being successfully used for biological material ablation, tissue imaging analysis and lipidomic analysis. While the introduction of matrix into Laser-REIMS atmospheric interface enhances the signal intensity and also expands the range of detectable molecular species, it has a negative effect on the robustness of the technology. Novel matrix introduction setups based on the application of diverse metal nanoparticles coating and labelling technology will be constructed and tested using a cell line-based test set and cancer tissues in order to maximise the detectability of subtle differences in the spectral patterns and imaging resolution.

Duties and responsibilities

The post involves the organization and administration of ambient mass spectrometric mucosal sample analysis and instrumentation development. There is considerable scope for career growth within the post.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Chemistry or Biology, or a closely related discipline or equivalent research. Experience in the synthesis and application of diverse nanomaterials, including gold, silver and iron oxide nanoparticles is essential, as is extensive experience in handling and preparing biofluid and biological tissue samples.
