Job summary

This post-doctoral position has been created as part of a multidisciplinary project funded by the Wellcome Trust to investigate the neuro-immune-stromal interactions in response to environmental change and how this drives allergic airway inflammation and remodelling. The postholder will investigate how the immune/stromal niche communicates with the external environment to contribute to lung inflammation, remodelling and dysfunction.

The successful candidate will use cutting edge immunopathology and imaging techniques to characterise the airway wall in children and adults with severe asthma. Concomitant with the human patient studies, they will also make use our extensively characterised neonatal and adult allergic airway mouse models to determine immune-neuro interactions and asses their impact on disease progression and lung function.

The post holder will use systems well established in the group but will have the freedom to develop novel systems to investigate our hypothesis. Once appointed, the post holder will be involved in developing and driving the project as well as writing up work for presentation and publication. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills are essential. You will be technically proficient at a high level to ensure up to date support for research

 

Duties and responsibilities


  • Using multi-parameter IHC, visualise immune-neuro interactions in lungs from mouse models and in bronchoscopy biopsies from patients with severe asthma.

  • To conduct murine models of allergic airways disease pathology, assess lung function, sampling of the airways and tissue processing.



  • Identify and develop suitable techniques, software, equipment for the collection and analysis of data.



  • To investigate phenotypic and molecular characteristics of pulmonary cells in health and disease by flow cytometry and transcriptomic analysis.

  • To conduct cytokine assays, histological analysis, immunocytochemistry, RNA extraction and real time PCR.

  • Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students and research assistants as required.

Essential requirements

You will have:

  • PhD in Immunology or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience with multiparameter IHC/IF techniques or Hyperion Mass Cytometry
  • Extensive microscopy and imaging experience (Confocal, widefield, live cell imaging)
  • Extensive experience of image analysis software (e.g. ImageJ, IMARIS, ICY, Huygens, Volocity)
  • Home Office Personal License / in vivo experience

This is a full time, fixed term contract for 2 years and you will be required to complete an online application for this post. 

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum
