To date there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.
The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.
We are a globally leading multidisciplinary research institute of 700 staff investigating the spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders causing dementia, with laboratory-based research groups located at Imperial College London, University College London, the University of Cambridge, Cardiff University, Edinburgh University, and King’s College London.
The research group of Dr Nathan Skene in the UK DRI at Imperial College London addresses key questions about the mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease. In a series of recent publications in Nature Genetics, the lab has demonstrated that single cell RNA-seq data from mice can be used to identify the cell types associated with genetic risk factors for neurodegenerative disease. We aim to develop single cell epigenetic techniques, such as ATAC-seq and CUT&TAG, to enhance our ability to map intergenic loci to cell type specific features.
Postdocs at the UK DRI at Imperial enjoy excellent career development opportunities including the opportunity to supervise and teach students, access to new, purpose-built laboratory space, and a collegial, team-oriented working environment. Imperial is the UK’s most international university and welcomes staff from all backgrounds and from all over the world. Support is available for the visa application process and fees and eligible candidates are encouraged to apply for a Global Talent Visa.
Duties and responsibilities
Prior experience in cellular genomics methods and a strong background in neurobiology will be assets. You’ll be proficient in using genomic/epigenomic approaches and a range of molecular methods for brain tissue analysis. Depending on the project you will have the opportunity to gain experience with the biology of epigenetic regulation and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) or embryonic stem cells (ESCs) culture systems.
- Research Associate: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
- Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
- Evidence for mastery of laboratory-based molecular biology skills
- Experience with some genomic techniques including but not limited to ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, DNase-seq, MNase-seq, CUT&TAG, CUT&RUN, Radicl-seq or Hi-C.
This is a Full Time and Fixed Term contract being offered initially for 12 months with potential for extension for a further 5 years.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Dr Nathan Skene for informal discussion about the role at firstname.lastname@example.org
