It is a very exciting time for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research with recent breakthroughs in drug development and licensing. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Research Nurse who will support specialist research and clinical care for CF trial participants to continue this exciting phase of research within our clinical partner organisation, the Royal Brompton Hospital, Guys & St Thomas’ Trust. You will work closely with patients, monitoring their progress through trials and assist in the management, coordination and implementation research programmes.
We provide access to clinical trials to the largest CF patient group in the UK and among the largest in Europe. The trials team is known throughout the world for our expertise, standard of care and research success. We are multidisciplinary, comprising clinicians, academics, allied health professionals and admin/ finance members working both at Imperial College London and the Royal Brompton. The trials undertaken by the group specifically target adults and children with CF.
The Respiratory Clinical Research Facility (CRF) provides a high-quality clinical environment, in which patients (adults and children) and healthy volunteers can undergo research programmes safely and effectively according to robust, ethically approved protocols. You will assist the team on global, multicentre interventional and observational studies being led by Profs Davies, Simmonds and colleagues.
Your role to support the research will is funded by the CF Trusts’ Clinical Trials Accelerator Platform (https://www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk/the-work-we-do/clinical-trials/clinical-trials-accelerator-platform). As well as being part of the CF Trust CTAP London network, the Imperial College/ Royal Brompton team is part of the European CF Society Clinical Trials Network (https://www.ecfs.eu/ctn). Both initiatives provide opportunities for our patients to participate in trials of new, cutting-edge medicines.
Duties and responsibilities
You will work with team members to recruit participants and collect meaningful scientific data for studies. Key duties will include obtaining and documenting informed consent, reviewing medical notes and collect auditable research data in an accurate and timely manner. During patient visits you will be required to administer study drugs and perform clinical assessments such as collecting and processing blood or other samples from participants, amongst other duties.
Good patient communication is key to this role; providing information and support to relatives/carers whilst demonstrating politeness, courtesy and sensitivity is essential. Communicating with colleagues is also an important aspect to the role and you will be confident in maintaining good relations with Sponsors, clients, visitors, relatives and colleagues.
Essential requirements
- You should hold a nursing qualification with registration at the NMC
- Evidence of up-to-date professional development
- Understanding of ethical practice and patient confidentiality
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Experience of working effectively in a team
- Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
Further information
This is a Full Time and Fixed Term post initially for 1 year based at the Royal Brompton Campus, London, but may spend some time at other partnering London centres as well.
As this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, at the appropriate level, will be required for the successful candidate.
