Job summary

Applications are invited for an exciting Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the laboratory of Professor Speck at Imperial College London (http://www.specklab.com/). This post aims to uncover fundamental and medically relevant mechanisms that guarantee efficient human DNA replication employing cutting-edge biochemical and structural approaches. The project’s primary objective is to discover 1.) how DNA replication origins are specified through epigenetic mechanisms and specific recruitment factors and 2.) how DNA replication is regulated to allow faithful DNA replication. The candidate will be able to take advantage of a recently established reconstituted system, which allows us to address these questions for the first time.

Who we are looking for:

We seek a creative researcher who enjoys tackling ambitious research questions. This project is ideal for a candidate who enjoys protein biochemistry, wants to learn cryo-EM/knows cryo-EM and wants to explore a new research area. Prior experience in the supervision of master students is an advantage. Professor Speck will mentor you in grant writing, networking and publishing

Duties and responsibilities

You will express and purify proteins and use these in sophisticated biochemical assays. An interest in cryo-EM or existing expertise in structural biology would be beneficial. We are well equipped for biochemistry (multiple AKTAs) and electron microscopy (Talos 200kV FEG cryo-EM Falcon 3, Vitrobot IV, GPU- and data storage-cluster and direct access to a Titan Krios with K3 detector)

Essential requirements

  • PhD & a strong publication record (published or submitted) (*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 - £41,388 per annum).

  • Extensive expertise in protein biochemistry

  • Strong knowledge in biochemical assays

  • Ability to troubleshoot and work independently
